How buyers search

What people ask AI about law firms.

Legal questions start with a problem, not a firm name. A person asks what to do after an accident or how custody works in their state, then asks who handles it nearby. AI answers draw on firm websites, attorney directories, bar records and reviews, and they favor firms whose details agree across all of them.

Sources

Where AI answers about law firms come from.

Answers are assembled from sources. We find the ones your market relies on and make sure your business is accurate in each.

  1. 01

    Practice-area pages

Pages that explain one legal problem, who it affects and how the firm handles it.

  2. 02

    Attorney directories

Avvo, Justia, Martindale-Hubbell, Super Lawyers and FindLaw profiles for the firm and each attorney.

  3. 03

    State bar records

Admission, standing and any certified-specialist status for each attorney.

  4. 04

    Business Profiles and reviews

Office locations, hours, practice categories and client reviews on Google and other platforms.

  5. 05

    Legal publications and local news

Articles, quotes and case coverage that name the firm or its attorneys.

Common gaps

Where AI answers go wrong for law firms.

Most gaps are not a ranking problem. They come from missing, conflicting or out-of-date information that the answer engines repeat.

Practice areas buried in one list

Many firm sites list fifteen practice areas on one page with a sentence each. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity who handles a specific matter, such as a contested probate or a non-compete dispute, the answer looks for a page that explains that matter. With no such page, it names a firm that has one, or a directory listing instead.

Former attorneys still listed

Directory profiles outlive the people on them. An Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell profile may still show a partner who left years ago, or an office the firm has closed. AI answers that blend these sources can name the wrong attorney, send people to an old address or describe the firm’s size and focus inaccurately, even when your site and bar records are correct.

Wrong state, county or court

Legal answers depend on jurisdiction. If your site never says which states your attorneys are admitted in, or which counties and courts the firm appears in, an assistant may leave the firm out of a local answer or place it in a neighboring market. Google AI Overviews often lean on Business Profile categories and location data to settle the question.

The work

What we change for law firms.

One page per practice area and matter type

Each page answers what a client asks first: who qualifies, how the process works, typical timelines and how fees are set.

Attorney profiles that agree everywhere

Bios with bar admissions, practice focus and publications, linked from every practice page each attorney serves.

Directory and profile alignment

Matching firm names, addresses, practice areas and attorney details across directories, bar listings and Business Profiles.

Clear jurisdictions

Plain statements of the states, counties and courts the firm serves, so answers place you in the right market.

Structured data

LegalService markup for the firm and Person markup for each attorney, matched to what each page already says.

Where to start

The first three changes, in order.

Order matters. Each step makes the next one easier for AI systems to read and trust. Your preview or first month confirms whether this order fits your business.

  1. 01

    Align the firm’s core facts

We start with the firm name, offices, attorneys and practice areas across your site, Business Profiles, bar listings and the main directories. Every later page builds on these facts. If they conflict, new content inherits the confusion, so fixing them first gives each later change a clean base to work from.

  2. 02

    Build the highest-value practice pages

Next we write or rebuild pages for the two or three matter types that bring your most valuable consultations. Each covers who qualifies, the process, timelines and how fees work, in your approved language. Starting narrow gives your attorneys time to review carefully and gives us a clear set of prompts to measure first.

  3. 03

    Connect attorneys to their matters

Third, we link each attorney profile to the practice pages that attorney serves and mark up both with structured data. This comes after the practice pages because the links need somewhere to point. It helps answers name the right lawyer for a matter, not only the firm, and keeps bios and pages in agreement.

Accuracy rules

How we keep law firms accurate and compliant.

AI answers repeat what they find. Every claim we publish is one your business can stand behind, and your team approves each change before it goes live.

  • Lawyer advertising rules vary by state bar. We keep claims, testimonials and any specialist wording within your state’s rules, and your firm approves every page.
  • Past matters appear only with your approval and the disclaimers your jurisdiction requires.
  • Intake pages ask for contact details, not confidential case facts.

Worked example

One question, start to finish.

Illustrative only: Larkspur & Vale Family Law is a fictional business, and no client data is shown.

The question
“Who are the best family lawyers in Tucson for a contested custody case?”
What the answers showed
The answers named larger Tucson firms and pointed to Avvo and Justia lists. Larkspur & Vale appeared once, described as a general practice firm, a label that came from an old directory category. Its site had a single family-law page with no section on custody, and one directory still listed a former partner as the lead attorney.
What we changed
We built a dedicated custody page covering Arizona’s legal decision-making and parenting-time process, how the firm approaches contested cases and how fees are set. We updated the practice categories on the Business Profile and directories, removed the former partner, and linked both family-law attorneys’ profiles to the new page with Person and LegalService markup.
What the next measurement checks
The next run repeats the same custody prompts and related Tucson family-law questions across each assistant. We check whether the firm is named, whether it is described as a family-law practice, and which attorney and sources the answers cite.

Measurement

How progress is measured.

  • Mentions and recommendations for each practice area across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.
  • The directories and articles AI answers cite in your market, and whether your profiles appear in them.
  • Calls and consultation requests by practice area, where your intake data allows.

Questions

AI SEO for law firms: common questions.

Can AI SEO help a small or solo law firm?

Yes. Answers to local legal questions often name smaller firms with clear practice pages, complete directory profiles and steady reviews. A focused panel of your main practice areas keeps the work affordable.

Will AI SEO conflict with our bar’s advertising rules?

The work is built around them. Most states base their rules on ABA Model Rules 7.1 to 7.3, with their own changes and additions. We start from your approved claims, follow your state’s rules on testimonials, specialization and disclaimers, and you approve each change before it goes live.

Do we need a page for every city we serve?

Only where the firm truly serves a market and has something specific to say about it, such as local courts or procedures. We keep city pages to the markets you actually work in.

How long before AI answers reflect the changes?

It varies by assistant and source. Answers that search the web live, such as Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick up a new page once it is crawled. Directory corrections often take longer to flow through. We record a baseline first, then re-run the same prompt panel on a set schedule, so you see change over time rather than a single snapshot.

Do client reviews matter, and can we ask for them?

Reviews are one of the signals AI answers repeat when they describe a firm. Rules on requesting testimonials, offering anything in return and responding to reviews vary by state. Replies also need to protect client confidentiality, including whether someone was a client at all. We build a request and response process around your bar’s rules, and your firm approves the wording.
