How buyers search

What people ask AI about financial advisors.

Advisor searches are driven by trust and by specific needs: retirement income, a business sale, equity compensation, a divorce. AI answers check regulatory records, comparison sites and the advisor’s own content before naming a firm. Firms that state their fees, client types and credentials plainly give those answers the most to work with.

Common gaps

Where AI answers go wrong for financial advisors.

Most gaps are not a ranking problem. They come from missing, conflicting or out-of-date information that the answer engines repeat.

Fee structure stated wrong

AI answers often describe a fee-only firm as fee-based, or quote a generic percentage-of-assets fee when the firm charges flat or tiered planning fees. The cause is usually a vague fees page, plus comparison sites and old articles that summarize Form ADV loosely. When your own site does not state the structure plainly, answers fall back on the averages they find elsewhere.

Missing from niche answers

Ask for an advisor who works with physicians, business owners or tech employees with equity compensation, and answers name the firms with a dedicated page for that client type. Firms that list every niche in one bullet on a services page are rarely named. The assistant has no page that shows depth, so it recommends the matching sites and firms that do have one.

Old advisor and registration details

Advisors change firms, earn new designations and retire. AI answers sometimes list a departed advisor, miss a new CFP or mix up an RIA with an affiliated broker-dealer. The cause is stale team pages, outdated directory profiles and press bios nobody updated. IAPD and BrokerCheck stay current, so any mismatch with your own site makes answers less confident about naming you.

Where to start

The first three changes, in order.

Order matters. Each step makes the next one easier for AI systems to read and trust. Your preview or first month confirms whether this order fits your business.

  1. 01

Align fees and status with Form ADV

We start with the fees and services pages. Fiduciary status and fee structure are the first facts investors check and the facts answers most often get wrong. Matching them to your current Form ADV gives your compliance team a clear reference to approve against, and every later page can point back to them.

  2. 02

    Update advisor profiles and records

Next come advisor profiles: credentials, registrations and links to IAPD or BrokerCheck. Profiles come second because AI answers cross-check people against public regulatory records. Once your site and those records agree, we correct comparison-site and directory profiles, so the same facts appear wherever an assistant looks.

  3. 03

Build pages for priority client types

With the facts settled, we write pages for the two or three client types you most want to grow. They come third because niche pages depend on accurate fee and advisor details. Each page answers the planning questions those clients actually ask and goes through compliance review before it is published.

Accuracy rules

How we keep financial advisors accurate and compliant.

AI answers repeat what they find. Every claim we publish is one your business can stand behind, and your team approves each change before it goes live.

  • Under the SEC Marketing Rule, testimonials, endorsements and third-party ratings need specific disclosures. We include them, and your compliance team approves every page.
  • Communications from broker-dealer representatives follow FINRA Rule 2210 review and filing requirements.
  • Performance figures appear only in the form your compliance policies allow.

Worked example

One question, start to finish.

Illustrative only: Halberd Creek Wealth Advisors is a fictional business, and no client data is shown.

The question
“Fee-only advisors in Denver who help tech employees with RSUs and stock options”
What the answers showed
Answers named national robo-advisor platforms, a matching site’s Denver list and a handful of local firms with pages on equity compensation. Halberd Creek appeared once, described as a fee-based firm charging a percentage of assets. In fact it is fee-only and charges flat planning fees for equity work. Its site mentioned stock options only in a single bullet on the services page.
What we changed
We rewrote the fees page to match the current Form ADV, stating fee-only status and the flat planning fee in plain terms. We added a page on equity compensation planning covering RSUs, ISOs, concentrated positions and tax timing, approved by the chief compliance officer. Advisor profiles gained links to IAPD, and the firm’s SmartAsset and Wealthtender profiles were updated to match.
What the next measurement checks
The next measurement re-runs the equity compensation prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. We look at whether Halberd Creek is named, whether its fee structure is described as fee-only and which pages the answers cite.

Measurement

How progress is measured.

  • Prompts for each client niche and planning need.
  • Whether answers state your fee structure and fiduciary status accurately.
  • Consultation requests by niche.

Questions

AI SEO for financial advisors: common questions.

Can a registered firm do AI SEO under the Marketing Rule?

Yes. Most of the work is clear pages, accurate profiles and educational content. Anything that counts as a testimonial, endorsement or third-party rating gets the disclosures the rule requires and goes through compliance review. Your chief compliance officer approves every page before it goes live, and we keep a record of what was approved and when.

Do comparison sites matter?

AI answers often cite SmartAsset, NerdWallet and Wealthtender when they name advisors. We keep your profiles complete and consistent with Form ADV where you choose to participate, and we make your own site the most detailed source. Paid matching programs are your decision. We show how each one appears in answers so you can weigh it.

We serve clients nationally. Do we need local pages?

Only where you have advisors or meet clients in person. A page for a city where you have no office reads as thin and can confuse answers about where you are. National firms usually gain more from pages for specific client types and planning needs, with a clear note that you work with clients remotely.

How long before AI answers reflect the changes?

It varies by assistant. Answers that search the web live, such as Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick up a corrected fees page once it has been crawled. Answers that lean on model training change more slowly. We record a baseline first, then re-run the same prompts on a regular schedule, so you can see what has changed and what has not yet.

Can you work alongside our compliance vendor or marketing agency?

Yes. Many firms already use a compliance archiving tool and an outside marketing or PR partner. We share drafts in the format your compliance workflow expects, keep approval records and coordinate with your agency on press quotes and bios, so the same credentials and fee language appear everywhere. Our focus is how AI answers describe you.
