How buyers search

What people ask AI about ecommerce brands.

Product answers blend specifications, reviews, prices and availability from many sources: brand sites, marketplaces, review publishers, forums and video. Brands with complete product data and clear category pages give AI answers more to work with. Shopping features in ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity now show products with prices and store links, so the data behind each listing decides which store a shopper reaches.

Sources

Where AI answers about ecommerce brands come from.

Answers are assembled from sources. We find the ones your market relies on and make sure your business is accurate in each.

  1. 01

    Product and category pages

Your specifications, sizing, materials, buying guides and Q&A.

  2. 02

    Product feeds

Google Merchant Center data for price, availability, shipping and returns.

  3. 03

    Marketplaces

Amazon, Walmart and retailer listings for the same products.

  4. 04

    Review and editorial sites

Product review publishers and YouTube reviews.

  5. 05

    Communities

Reddit and enthusiast forums where buyers compare products.

Common gaps

Where AI answers go wrong for ecommerce brands.

Most gaps are not a ranking problem. They come from missing, conflicting or out-of-date information that the answer engines repeat.

Specs locked inside images

Many product pages put size charts, materials and compatibility notes inside images, script-loaded tabs or downloadable PDFs. AI assistants work from text, so they fill the gaps from marketplace listings or reviewer summaries instead. The answer then describes your product in someone else’s words, sometimes with the wrong dimensions, an older version or a missing feature that matters to the shopper.

Feeds that disagree with pages

Merchant Center feeds, on-page prices and Product markup drift apart after sales, restocks and shipping changes. When the feed says in stock and the page says backordered, or the return window differs, shopping surfaces may drop the offer or show stale details. Shoppers then see a price or delivery promise you do not honor, or a competitor’s listing in place of yours.

Marketplaces treated as the source

When Amazon or Walmart listings carry more reviews, more Q&A and fuller specifications than your own site, answers often cite the marketplace and send the shopper there. Your brand is still named, but the sale, the customer relationship and the margin go elsewhere. Thin category pages make this worse, because nothing on your site explains which product suits which need.

We rerun the same panel on the same platforms, so you can see what the work changed.

Where to start

The first three changes, in order.

Order matters. Each step makes the next one easier for AI systems to read and trust. Your preview or first month confirms whether this order fits your business.

  1. 01

    Make feeds and pages agree

We start by reconciling Merchant Center data, on-page prices, availability, shipping and return terms, and Product markup. This comes first because mismatches can suppress listings outright, and every later improvement depends on shopping systems trusting your offer data. It is also the quickest way to stop answers quoting a price or delivery promise you do not offer.

  2. 02

    Write out the product facts

Next we move specifications, materials, sizing and compatibility out of images and PDFs and into text on your priority product pages. Once the offer data is trusted, the product description is what answers compare. Starting with high-margin, well-reviewed lines puts the work where shoppers already show interest and where a better answer is worth the most.

  3. 03

    Build selection pages

Third, we write category and buying-guide pages that answer the comparison questions in your prompt panel, such as which shoe for wide feet or which pan for induction. These come after the product facts because a guide is only as useful as the pages it links to. Together they give answers a reason to cite you over a marketplace.

Accuracy rules

How we keep ecommerce brands accurate and compliant.

AI answers repeat what they find. Every claim we publish is one your business can stand behind, and your team approves each change before it goes live.

  • Review collection follows the FTC rule on consumer reviews: no fake or purchased reviews, and no suppressing negative ones.
  • Product claims such as organic, non-toxic or made in the USA match what you can substantiate.
  • Prices, shipping and return terms are the same on the page, in feeds and in markup.

Worked example

One question, start to finish.

Illustrative only: Bramblewick Trail Supply, a fictional outdoor gear brand is a fictional business, and no client data is shown.

The question
“What size backpack do I need for a three-day hike, and which brands make good ones for a short torso?”
What the answers showed
Answers named two large outdoor retailers, a gear review publisher and several Reddit threads. Bramblewick’s mid-size pack appeared once, linked to a marketplace listing with an old colorway and no torso range. Its own product page held the fit chart only as an image, so no answer mentioned the adjustable harness or the short-torso size the brand makes.
What we changed
We rewrote the fit chart as text, added torso ranges and capacity guidance to each pack page, and published a buying guide on choosing pack size by trip length. We reconciled the Merchant Center feed with current colorways and return terms, added Product and return-policy markup, and updated the marketplace listing to match the brand site.
What the next measurement checks
The next measurement re-runs the pack-size and short-torso prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and records whether answers cite Bramblewick’s own pages, describe the harness correctly and show current colorways and return terms.

Measurement

How progress is measured.

  • Category and product prompts for your priority lines.
  • Citations of your own pages compared with marketplaces and review sites.
  • Revenue from AI referrals, where your analytics can track it.

Questions

AI SEO for ecommerce brands: common questions.

Marketplaces get many of the citations. What can we do?

We strengthen your own product pages and feeds so answers have a direct, complete source, and keep your marketplace listings consistent with them. Answers tend to cite the page that holds the specifics others lack, such as fit details, compatibility and care. When your site is that page, shoppers have a reason to buy from you directly.

Which products should we start with?

Your highest-margin categories and products with strong reviews. We build a prompt panel around the questions shoppers ask about those lines, measure where you appear today and fix the gaps there first. Once the approach is working on a small set, we expand it to the next categories in your catalog.

Does structured data matter for AI shopping answers?

Accurate Product, price, availability, shipping and return markup helps search systems read your catalog without guessing. It works best when it matches the visible page and your Merchant Center feed exactly. Markup that disagrees with the page can do more harm than none, so we treat page, feed and markup as one set of facts.

How does Google Merchant Center affect AI answers?

Merchant Center supplies the price, availability, shipping and return data behind Google’s shopping results, and Google’s AI features can draw on the same product data. Disapproved items, missing attributes or a price that differs from the page can keep products out. We review feed diagnostics, fill missing attributes such as GTINs and sizes, and keep feed and page in step.

Can our products appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

ChatGPT shows product results with images, prices and store links, drawn from structured product data and sources across the web, and OpenAI has opened ways for merchants to share product data directly. Organic product results depend on the data the system can read, so we make sure your product data is complete, current and consistent wherever it is read.
